Journey Beyond Sports

“The JBS Program”

THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES

What are the major challenges college athletes face – whether they graduate or not – when transitioning out of sports?

Student-athletes might:

  • Feel inadequately prepared for life after graduation.
  • Feel torn between their athletic obligations and excelling in the classroom.
  • Struggle with setting long-term goals after spending so much time on immediate goals during college.
  • Lack internship experience and networking opportunities outside of sports.
  • Struggle to establish their identities outside of sports.
  • Struggle with depression after graduation if they are unable to establish their identities after sports.
  • Be afraid to explore options beyond sports.
  • Feel lost without guidance or direction

What skills can be used as an advantage to student-athletes transitioning into the workforce?

Student-athletes:

  • Have experience with teamwork, leadership, and working in diverse environments.
  • Represent the leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills that employers are looking for.
  • Are competitive, they long to win, and will work hard to exceed expectations.
  • Are disciplined, conscious of deadlines, and attentive to detail.

What should happen when student-athletes realize they are not going to play professional sports?

Student-athletes should:

  • Fully understand the job interview process.
  • Take advantage of alumni events on campus.
  • Be allowed to participate in Career Fairs off campus, with various companies in the areas of interest.
  • Build job-seeking skills, take advantage of professional shadow opportunities, and enhance their professional networks.

How the JBS PROGRAM can benefit your student-athlete?
